Hey, y’all. I know I haven’t written one of these in a while. I deleted my old blog because I was in a rough spot mentally, but I realized I really like having a blog, so I made a new one.
As you know, I got back into Guilty Gear and started playing Giovanna because she was fun. I had a coaching session with Nitro that taught me how to play her pretty well. I kept playing Gio for another couple of weeks, but started struggling against certain characters. It felt like I wasn’t losing to the player; I was losing to the character, which was really frustrating.
So, as a joke, I decided to play Ky. I hate Ky, but I wanted to prove I wasn’t that trash at the game. I took him into training mode, looked at his moves, and immediately did my placements without practicing a block string or anything. My placement was terrible, but Ky felt annoyingly natural to play. He worked how my brain wanted to work, so I kept playing him and reached Silver 3.
I then had a coaching session with a Bedman player. I didn’t get what I originally intended from the session, but I did get good information that helped me later. I think that was more about how I explained what I wanted than anything they did.
I kept playing Ky, but even after more than 50 games, I couldn’t find a good way out of Giovanna and May’s pressure. I would block and wait, but when I tried to jump out, Gio would hit me with the backflip kick and put me right back into pressure. If I tried playing more aggressively and dropped something, May or Gio would run me over. I still enjoyed playing Ky and will probably keep him as a secondary, but I eventually went back to Baiken.
Baiken is the character I’ve played the most, and she’s just cool as hell. I had worried that playing only Baiken would make me unable to learn anyone else, because I don’t want to be a one-character specialist. Playing Gio and Ky proved that wasn’t true.
After returning to Baiken, I went 22–3 and climbed from Floor 3 back to Floor 7. Floor 8 is a little much for me right now, and Tower is slower because fewer people play it, but the matches also feel sweatier than Ranked.
I also had a coaching session with Bronsua, and it was legitimately one of the best coaching sessions I’ve ever had. They were super cool and gave me a practice plan that I’m currently working on.
One thing I want to mention is that I’ve been struggling with my mental lately. I have BPD, so my emotions can go from zero to one hundred very quickly. I know I’m not supposed to take the game personally, but sometimes even random little things feel personal.
That makes me question my relationship with Guilty Gear. I love the community and generally have fun playing, but sometimes my mental health acts up and I end up yelling at a video game or getting angry for seemingly no reason. That’s the part that makes my relationship with the game difficult.
My goal isn’t to be the best Guilty Gear player. I want to reach the point where I can consistently compete and finish top eight at tournaments. I’ve technically done it before, but that was a long time ago. I’m nowhere near the same player, and the game has changed so much that the old result doesn’t really matter anymore. Like I still have a long way to go but I feel like we're finally progressing in the right direction
Oh yeah I forgot to mention this but I did write Sharpie on my controller learn adapt improve stick to the grind and set goals
Just so that I have to mentally lock in and like it's a reminder like Hey we're learning hey let's try adapting to whatever this is right it's a way to keep myself committed to the game and a controller
Thank you if you took time to read this
